Medtech has not yet been spared from the Trump administration’s trade tariffs, which, for UK exporters will be 10% – half the rate applied to EU27 exporters.

UK ministers sought put a positive spin on the US administration’s imposition of a relatively low 10% “reciprocal” tariff on UK exports, while the EU was dealt a 20% tariff and Switzerland 31%. But as Swiss Medtech said on receiving its painful news on 2 April, a trade war is a war, and there are no real winners in a war.

Trade secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the outcome for the UK vindicated the government’s pragmatic approach to US trade relations. No mention was made of how EU partners would view the differential treatment meted out by Trump. The tariff will apply to UK exporters at 5
