“It’s quite likely [consumer wearable manufacturers] are changing the sensitivity and specificity based on consumer feedback, but not for medical reasons,” said Dipak Kotecha, a University of Birmingham professor of cardiology. Often, self-reported performance evidence from manufacturers is “low quality and biased.”

“There is a massive opportunity for the deployment [of wearable devices] within clinical environments. But we need to understand the limitations” to be able to use the products in treatment decisions, said Dipak Kotecha, consultant cardiologist and professor of cardiology at the University of Birmingham (UoB), who recently presented at the UoB digital health business networking event titled “How can health data research drive better patient care?”
