Looking back a century, in 1920, French researchers perfected a tuberculosis vaccine for use in children from infected households. And the first tetanus anatoxin was produced. In the same year, Frederick Banting of the University of Toronto began a development journey that would eventually lead to the successful use of purified insulin in diabetics. Banting, along with John Macleod, was in 1923 awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of insulin.
