Acquisitions, New Technologies Reshaping Advanced Wound Care

Acquisitions and innovation are rapidly changing the dynamics in the global advanced wound care market, a high need, high growth market estimated at $5.4 billion in 2013. With the number of chronic wounds in major countries estimated at a whopping 26.7 million, the global advanced wound care market is projected to grow at a brisk 6% CAGR, reaching $7.3 billion by 2018.

According to the International Diabetes Foundation, an astounding 382 million people around the world are afflicted with this debilitating disease. The global prevalence of diabetes is vast, ranging from 7% to 10% of the population in developed countries to nearly 20% in various countries in the Middle East. In the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), the prevalence is at the high end of developed nations at 9% to 10%; however, the number of diabetic foot ulcers, a common sequela resulting from neuropathy and poor vascularity leading to impaired healing, is enormous. Of the 12 million diabetic foot ulcers estimated in key regions by BioMedGPS, 75% or 9 million are in the BRIC countries.
