The European Commission’s proposals for legislative reform in the pharmaceutical sector are welcome but must go further to address patient and societal needs, says a coalition of five EU countries dedicated to improving access to medicines.

BeNeLuxA, the cross-country medicines access coalition is calling for a paradigm shift in pharmaceutical innovation from a supply driven system to a “more needs driven model.” The coalition has welcomed the European Commission’s proposals for reforming EU pharmaceutical legislation, but says more needs to be done to ensure patients get the medicines they require, for example by establishing an EU-level system for defining unmet need and using it to incentivize and reward innovation.
