China Pharma Distributors Expand While Retail Pharmacies Face Strong Headwinds

An annual report from China’s Ministry of Commerce describes a faster pace of consolidation in the distribution sector, but prolonged challenges for retailers.

BEIJING – China’s three biggest pharmaceutical distributors gobbled up nearly one-third of total drug distribution revenues in 2011, and their market shares continue to rise. In comparison, strong headwinds have prompted small drugstore chains to form alliances to share platforms and save costs, China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said.
