Continuous glucose monitoring has been the watchword in the diabetes device industry for several years now, but this technology represents only the beginning of the evolution occurring in diabetes management today. Integration of technologies is widely believed to be the necessary path toward the ultimate goal—a truly automated, continuous, closed-loop system that can measure glucose and adjust insulin therapy according to the patient’s changing needs. Efforts to develop a closed-loop system are being led by Medtronic PLC, which makes both glucose sensors and insulin pumps and which currently markets an integrated pump and three-day continuous interstitial sensor system (see "Taking Aim at Diabetes, Medtech Insight, August 2007Also see "Taking Aim at Diabetes" - Medtech Insight, 1 August, 2007.). However, two smaller competitors in this field recently took a big step forward in product integration that will improve their ability to compete in this field in the near term and may eventually heat up the race toward a closed-loop system as well.
