Senate HELP To Hear From Stakeholders In Changed Cosmetics Industry

Since 2012 when a House committee held the last cosmetics hearing, industry generally has warmed to – or resigned itself to – legislative proposals to update the cosmetics regulatory system. However, there is still not consensus on the details among big business, SMEs and consumer advocates, all of which will be represented at the Senate HELP Committee’s witness table.

It’s been more than four years since the last congressional hearing on the state of the cosmetics sector, and when the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee convenes Sept. 22 they will hear from leading stakeholder representatives in a changed industry.

Titled "Exploring Current Practices in Cosmetic Development and Safety," the Senate HELP hearing will include representatives of some of the same groups that were on the House Energy and Commerce

The Washington Department of Ecology hasn’t backed down on its targeting of formaldehyde-releasing preservatives under the state’s Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, as industry still awaits a draft final rule. In a recent webinar, attorney Angela Deisch of Amin Wasserman Gurnani, LLP said the department has also not provided clarity on penalties under the law, which goes into effect 1 January.
