New York On Verge Of Setting Limits For 1,4-Dioxane In Cosmetic Products

Cosmetic cleansing products containing 1,4-dioxane at levels above 1 part per million would be unlawfully marketed in New York beginning in 2023 under legislation passed by the state’s legislature in June. Governor Andrew Cuomo reportedly is reviewing the bill.

Legislation in New York that would impose caps on the amount of 1,4-dioxane that can be present in cosmetics and household cleaners awaits just Governor Andrew Cuomo’s signature.

The New York Senate and Assembly both passed the legislation, S. 4389b, in June. Reports suggest the governor, who has made a priority of consumer product safety and transparency issues in 2019, is reviewing the bill currently

The Washington Department of Ecology hasn’t backed down on its targeting of formaldehyde-releasing preservatives under the state’s Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, as industry still awaits a draft final rule. In a recent webinar, attorney Angela Deisch of Amin Wasserman Gurnani, LLP said the department has also not provided clarity on penalties under the law, which goes into effect 1 January.
