California DTSC Eyes Hair Relaxers, Straighteners For Next Safer Consumer Product Priority

The Department of Toxic Substances Control does not identify specific chemicals of concern in its 2021-2023 Priority Product Draft Work Plan, but says it is focusing on ingredients and endpoints associated with children, women of childbearing age, communities of color and aquatic impacts.

Hair straightening and relaxer products may be the next area of focus for California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control as it works to reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals under its Safer Consumer Products (SCP) regulation, according to a draft work plan.

Within the Beauty, Personal Care and Hygiene Products category, the DTSC so far has concentrated on nail products, specifically identifying toluene and methyl methacrylate as possible priorities for
