Add extreme weather to the causes of the US infant formula shortage, which the chief executive of a manufacturer increasing production in response doesn’t expect to start easing until early 2023.

Less than two weeks after restarting production at its facility in Sturgis, MI, where around half of its total formula supply is made, Abbott  announced on 15 June that severe thunderstorms and heavy rains with high winds through southwestern Michigan the previous day caused power outages and flood damage throughout the area

Production of EleCare specialty powder formula which began when the plant operated by the firm’s Abbott Nutrition business opened on 4 June was stopped to assess damage
