The UK biosimilars market is gaining increased political attention, as demonstrated by the attendance of Rosalind Campion, director of the Office for Life Sciences and Mark Samuels, the CEO of Medicines UK (the industry organization for non-branded products, including biosimilars) at Celltrion UK’s new office opening.

There are still major questions over the attractiveness of the market, such as issues which remain with the commissioning system in place for biosimilars, in combination with how biosimilar product sales are subsequently taxed (referring to the additional tax on revenue, known as VPAG). These conditions significantly reduce financial viability for manufacturers. This challenging environment in the biosimilars market is becoming unattractive to many manufacturers, resulting in some manufacturers not having a presence in the UK, or withdrawing or choosing not to launching products here. This can lead to a significant risk of product supply issues occurring, and patients not being able to access the care and treatment that they need.

There is a need for ongoing dialogue with DHSC (Department of Health and Social Care) regarding the taxation of non-branded medicinal products, to ensure it supports market sustainability and patient access to medicines.
