Methylene chloride, which has been prohibited from use in any amount in cosmetic products in the US since 1989, has been detected at high levels in four gel nail polish removers in testing by the Food and Drug Administration.
The agency says the substance is likely harmful to human health and has been shown to cause cancer in animals.
