Set to provide a COVID-19 vaccine partnered with AstraZeneca/Oxford to COVAX and various governments from Brazil to South Africa, India's Serum Institute assures that a fire at one of its units under construction will not impact supplies.

It seems to be a baptism by fire as far as Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd.’s COVID-19 vaccine efforts are concerned. A controversy over a conditional authorization for its candidate, Covishield, in India on the back of limited data was followed by several reportedly unrelated deaths in a vaccination drive. Now, the company is having to literally fight fires at its facilities.

On 21 January, a blaze at a site at Manjari in Pune left five human fatalities and millions of rupees worth damage in its wake
