Eli Lilly and Company is making another big addition to its manufacturing and research and development capacity with a plant close to its Indianapolis headquarters that is set to open in a few years. The announcement closely follows the opening of a plant in the same area that Lilly is using to ramp up capacity to meet rapidly burgeoning demand for its diabetes and obesity products.

The drug maker will spend $4.5bn on a “Lilly Medicine Foundry” that it said would provide extra manufacturing capacity as well as research ways to improve manufacturing processes.
