Dr. Andrew Plump joined Takeda from Sanofi in 2015 as the Japanese company's chief medical and scientific officer. In his current position, based in the US, he leads the global R&D organization, which has seen much fundamental change over the past 18 months.

In the first of this two-part interview, conducted at Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.'s headquarters in Tokyo during one of his regular visits to Japan, Plump outlines the strategic thinking behind Takeda's recent R&D reorganization and its decision to focus on selected therapeutic areas.
