An estimated 54 million people suffer from depression in China and the figure is rising. Despite accounting for around 4% of the total population, many sufferers are still not properly diagnosed and/or treated due to a chronic shortage of psychiatrists, while there are only 1.7 physicians per 100,000 people specialized in psychiatric conditions.
