The Miudella intrauterine device (IUD) from Sebela Women’s Health has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, Sebela announced on 25 February. The approval makes Miudella only the second hormone-free IUD available in the US, and the first to be authorized since Cooper Surgical’s Paragard in 1984.

The device, which uses a flexible frame to ease insertion and minimize the dose of copper, is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Clinical trial lead David Turok said it represents “a real advance” in contraceptive options.
