University NHS Foundation Trust runs an adherence program for patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective and bipolar disorder. The Care4Today Mental Health Solutions program is designed to reduce acute mental hospital admissions. It includes a diagnostic checklist, education modules, telephone and text reminder services, and a mobile platform (and apps) to optimize adherence, which works for all approved medications. 18-month data among 63 patients on the program showed a 58% reduction in mean number of in-patient bed days per patient, better adherence (as measured by a validated, patient-reported Medication Adherence Rating Scale) and high rates of satisfaction with the program among patients. The program has also been rolled out in San Diego, CA.
