Medtech Procurement A Victim Of Turkey’s Ongoing Economic Troubles

Industry urges switch from pricing- to value-based procurement

The devaluation of the Turkish Lira since May is making imports of medical devices more expensive and putting hospital procurement under renewed pressure. The local medtech industry associations TUMDEF and ARTED describe the problems  ̶  and the solutions  ̶  to Medtech Insight.

The Turkish government’s policy of keeping hospital medtech prices low is making it increasingly difficult for Turkish patients to access innovative medtech products, given the ongoing economic issues facing the country.

At the start of 2021, one US dollar bought TRY 13.39, but after a brief period of relative stability, spring saw renewed slippage of the Lira, which is now worth $0.058 (TRY 17.32 to the dollar). One Euro buys around TRY 18.18, as against TRY 15.10 at the start of the year
