Aerie's Rhopressa Approved Early For Glaucoma, 2018 Launch Planned

The first of Aerie's two glaucoma candidates, Rhopressa, was approved in the US and a submission for combination product Roclatan is expected next year. Rhopressa may have muted uptake in 2018, however, since it won't launch until the second quarter and half of its market is covered by Medicare Part D.

Aerie Pharmaceuticals Inc. will launch its first of two glaucoma drugs in the middle of the second quarter of 2018 as planned even though the US FDA approved Rhopressa two months earlier than expected. Even then it will take another seven or eight months for half of the drug's patients to gain access.

Irvine, Calif.-based Aerie said on Dec. 18 that Rhopressa (netarsudil ophthalmic solution 0.02%) was approved for the lowering of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension in a decision that arrived well in advance of a Feb. 28 PDUFA date set by the FDA
