St. Jude Warns Of Battery-Depletion Issues With Some ICDs

St. Jude Medical has issued a warning about premature battery depletion issues in some ICDs, but says it has already fixed the problem. Analysts say it is not likely to have any impact on Abbott’s plans to acquire St. Jude by the end of 2016.

St. Jude Medical Inc. issued a field advisory on Oct. 11 warning physicians and patients of the potential for batteries in certain implantable defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization defibrillators to deplete prematurely.

The company says about 0.21% of ICDs and CRT-Ds manufactured before May 23, 2015, may run out of power prematurely...
