COVID-19: UK NHS Chief Calls For 90% Return To Planned Care Within 3 Months

The much-anticipated return to a “normal” NHS service delivery could yet be dashed by a resurgence of the virus.

Embattled UK National Health Service chief executive Simon Stevens is encouraging a faster return to pre-COVID-19 level of planned and elective care service delivery. In a letter to NHS service heads, he set an aim of recovering the maximum elective activity possible between now and winter, using re-contracted independent hospitals to add to NHS capacity.

Stevens, whose six year leadership of the service has been questioned in recent weeks – for apparently doing both too much leading (at the expense of the health ministry) and too little operational COVID-19 control – has requested a rising
