FDA investigates Breathable Foods’just-launched AeroShot Pure Energy after Sen. Chuck Schumer raised concerns about the product to Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. The New York Democrat said children likely will abuse the canister product, which releases a puff of quickly dissolving caffeine powder into the user’s mouth ([A#05120206002]). Breathable Foods CEO Tom Hadfield said in a Feb. 19 statement the Cambridge, Mass., firm is confident of AeroShot’s regulatory compliance and is cooperating with FDA’s review. In a December letter to Hamburg, Schumer said AeroShot “seems well on its way to being marketed to encourage use by young adults in conjunction with alcohol.” He also urged FDA to request data on the effects of inhalable caffeine on people aged 12 to 20.
