A coronavirus vaccine race is on in China with three domestic developers leading the charge, while traditional medicines are pioneering the drug race after the first official approvals of treatments for COVID-19.

China is moving at stunning speed to grant regulatory clearances for new vaccines and drugs for the coronavirus. Two more domestically developed vaccines have now been given the go-ahead to enter clinical testing, meaning the race is heating up quickly. Meanwhile, several traditional medicines have also been approved for use against SARS-CoV-2.

Days after allowing the first clinical study of a pandemic vaccine developed by the Academy of Military Science and Tianjin CanSino Biotechnology Inc., the Chinese regulatory agency has allowed two other coronavirus vaccines to enter human testing. One has been developed by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products under Sinopharm Group Co. Ltd
