The top two senior officials in the US Food and Drug Administration’s vaccine review and approval operation plan to retire this fall, potentially adding to the agency’s challenges as it works to clear the coronavirus vaccines in children and booster shots for adults.

Marion Gruber, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research’s Office of Vaccines Research and Review, plans to leave the agency on 31 October
