New regulations that will provide Philippine residents with access to low-priced medicines are due to come into effect on 21 November. After seven rounds of public consultation, the Department of Health, the Intellectual Property Office, the Department of Trade and Industry and the Bureau of Food and Drugs have issued the rules and regulations that implement the Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality Medicines Act of 2008, which was signed into law in June1-5. The aim is to reduce the price of medicines, especially those that are commonly bought by the poor, to half their 2001 rates.
