German pharmaceutical industry groups claim the updated EU directive on urban wastewater that will oblige pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries to pay for removing micropollutants from waste water will place a heavy and disproportionate burden on companies. The directive, which is set to be published in the Official Journal of the EU later this year is also contradictory to moves to strengthen the EU’s pharmaceutical industry, say four industry groups, which represent innovative and off-patent sectors.
The legislation would, according to European Parliament member Nils Torvalds, “significantly improve water management and wastewater treatment standards in Europe, especially with new rules on removing micro-pollutants coming from medicines and personal care products
