EU Urban Wastewater Directive Update ‘Unfairly Targets Pharmaceutical Industry’

The European Parliament has voted for a deal agreed with the council of ministers to ensure polluters pay for cleaning up urban wastewater.

German pharmaceutical industry groups claim the updated EU directive on urban wastewater that will oblige pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries to pay for removing micropollutants from waste water will place a heavy and disproportionate burden on companies. The directive, which is set to be published in the Official Journal of the EU later this year is also contradictory to moves to strengthen the EU’s pharmaceutical industry, say four industry groups, which represent innovative and off-patent sectors.
