FTC Warns 37 'Green' Seal Certifiers, Users For Potential Deception

In warning letters to five environmental seal certifiers and 32 businesses that use those seals, the Federal Trade Commission says it is concerned that the logos could be deceptive and potentially mislead consumers. Meanwhile, increased FTC attention to "green" claims and certification programs makes more conspicuous the agency's relative inaction regarding similarly marketed "natural" products.

Marketers using "green" certification seals should take measures to clarify environmental benefits so as not to mislead consumers, the Federal Trade Commission says, recently issuing 37 warning letters to certifiers and businesses whose practices in the area could be considered deceptive.
