ECHA Committees Back Proposed Microplastic Restriction; Opinions Releasing Soon

The European Chemicals Agency’s Risk Assessment Committee has adopted its opinion backing the agency’s proposal to ban use of intentionally added microplastics in cosmetics and other products. The Committee for Socio-economic Analysis similarly supports the measure with a draft opinion issuing soon for consultation, according to the ECHA’s 10 June update.

Since January 2019 when the European Chemicals Agency proposed banning use of intentionally added microplastics in products, including all cosmetics, optimism has dwindled among industry advocates that committee work would help to moderate the proposal.

The ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) now has adopted its opinion on the matter, deeming the proposal appropriate for reducing microplastic releases to the environment, according to a 10 June
