ECHA Deliberates On Final Microplastic Proposal As Beauty Industry’s Fate Hangs In Balance

A combined final opinion on the European Chemicals Agency’s proposed microplastic restriction is expected from ECHA committees by year-end, at which point the European Commission will consider whether and when microplastic must be removed from all leave-on cosmetic products marketed in the EU.

The cosmetics industry potentially will have six years to remove microplastic from all leave-on products marketed in Europe unless the European Chemicals Agency and a key advisory committee deviate in coming weeks from the agency’s original proposal.

The ECHA’s committees for risk assessment (RAC) and socio-economic analysis (SEAC) are expected to submit a combined final opinion by year-end on the microplastic restriction that the ECHA proposed in January 2019,
