US Rep. Schakowsky Wants Cosmetic Supply Chain Transparency; Benzene In Sunscreen Cited

Cosmetic ingredient and raw material suppliers would be required to share toxicity and safety data with brand owners, along with certificates of analysis and contaminant testing reports, under the Cosmetic Supply Chain Transparency Act of 2021. The bill is part of a proposed Safer Beauty package introduced in the US House on 29 July by Jan Schakowsky, D-IL, and colleagues.

Johnson & Johnson’s recent sunscreen product recall due to benzene contamination illustrates the need for greater transparency in the beauty and personal-care supply chain, according to advocates for a related US House bill introduced on 29 July by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-IL.

“Here you have one of the largest corporations in the world and they don’t know how benzene is ending up in their products,” said Mark Rossi, executive director of Clean Production Action, in a same-day press briefing organized by Breast Cancer Prevention Partners
