EU Novel Food Approvals: Yes To Vit D Mushroom Powder, No To New Zinc Source

Two novel food applications were recently reviewed by the European Food Safety Authority, with one from Monterey Mushrooms for vitamin D2 mushroom powder approved, and another from Hamari Chemicals for a new source of zinc rejected.

A mushroom powder containing vitamin D2 produced by ultraviolet irradiation has secured a positive opinion as a novel food from the European Food Safety Authority.

EFSA’s panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens judged that mushroom powder from Agaricus bisporus containing vitamin D2 in the range of 125–375 µg/g
