In Brief

The European Commission has amended EU REACH chemicals law so that SMEs pay less in registration fees, while larger companies pay more. More news in brief.

The European Commission has amended the registration fee schedule under European REACH law to benefit small and medium-sized enterprises so that they “remain competitive during the current difficult market situation,” the Commission says in a Mar. 20 release. As of Mar. 22, the “reduction awarded to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in registration and authorization fees will be increased by 5 percentage points,” ECHA says. Depending on the size of the company, SMEs could benefit from reductions ranging from 35% to 95% for standard registration costs, and from 25% to 90% for authorization requests, the Commission says. To offset revenue reduction under the program, large companies’ tab will go up, with standard registration fees and charges increasing 4% and standard authorization fees increasing 3.5%. REACH fees were not updated between 2009 and 2012, the EC notes. Companies can ask for an extension to the payment deadlines in certain cases by contacting the ECHA helpdesk. A revised version of the REACH fee calculator plug-in and of the corresponding dossier submission manual will be available in due course on ECHA's website.
