FDA Seeks Comment On 'Natural' Food Labeling; Cosmetics Not Mentioned

Agency is soliciting input as to how "natural" on food labeling is perceived by consumers, how the term should be defined in the sector and what the public health benefits of a regulatory definition would be. Cosmetics are conspicuously absent from the docket discussion, though attorneys note that the same issues are hotly contested in the personal-care space and have given rise to similar legal challenges.

Citizen petitions and federal court requests have prompted FDA to solicit public comment on whether and how "natural" should be defined and regulated in the food and dietary supplement sectors, but rulemaking, if it even happens, is likely a long way off.
