'Landmine' Of Consequences In Nutrition, Supplement Facts Label Changes

FDA’s final rule updating Nutrition Facts labels will have a far-reaching impact on products beyond labeling. The requirements also will change nutrient daily values, potentially affecting product claims and the way in which consumers perceive products, say food consultants during an FDLI webinar.

Food and dietary supplement firms have their work cut out for them to comply with FDA’s first update to Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts labels in 20 years because, even though the compliance date for most firms is two years away, the rules impact some product formulations.

“These regulations, from a marketing standpoint, are full of landmines and unintended consequences that need to be analyzed for strategic calculating purposes,” said Bruce Silverglade, senior consultant for EAS Consulting Group, during a Food & Drug Law
