EU Watch: Three Cosmetics-Relevant Areas Targeted For Imminent Policy Development

The European Commission is committed to completing its review “shortly” of the Cosmetics Regulation in light of endocrine disruptor criteria recently implemented in other sectors. Cosmetics industry stakeholders should also keep an eye out for developments as the Commission evolves its approach to nanomaterials and microplastics.

The European Commission is reviewing the Cosmetics Regulation vis-à-vis its more sophisticated understanding today of endocrine disruptors and the nanomaterials landscape, while awaiting a restrictions proposal from the European Chemicals Agency that could affect cosmetic microplastics use.

The initiatives reflect the EU’s sharpening focus on ingredients that traditionally have had little visibility in the cosmetics sector, as well as less extensively studied
