Congressional Races Could Alter Cosmetics Legislative Outlook, Starting With House Energy & Commerce

Recent polling suggests the “blue wave” headed for Congress may not be of the magnitude hyped by some. But if Dems do flip the House as expected, cosmetics reform legislation will go through an Energy & Commerce Committee likely chaired by New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone, who’s been a highly vocal critic of current cosmetics safety controls.

In Congress's current meeting, Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., has called FDA’s inspection program for imported cosmetics “startling” in its inadequacy, sounded off on asbestos and other contaminated-cosmetic dangers while standing outside a Claire’s store in his district, and repeatedly called for a hearing to promote cosmetics legislative reform efforts.

That hearing, which was promised to be the venue for Pallone’s unveiling of a cosmetics bill he circulated in discussion form in 2016, hasn’t materialized
