EU’s SCCS Finds Endocrine-Disrupting Evidence Inconclusive In UV Filter Reassessments

While endocrine-disrupting evidence was inconclusive, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety recommends more conservative limits on use of homosalate, octocrylene and benzophenone-3 in cosmetic products compared with current requirements under the European Cosmetics Product Regulation.

The EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has preliminarily determined UV filters homosalate, octocrylene and benzophenone-3, aka oxybenzone, safe for use in cosmetics (including sunscreens), albeit in some instances at substantially lower levels than currently permitted.

For all three ingredients, the independent scientific committee deemed available endocrine-disrupting evidence insufficient to factor in its safety calculations.
