FTC Will Move Forward ‘Expeditiously’ With Proposed Rule Targeting Fake Reviews Online

The proposed rule shows the FTC “using all available means to attack deceptive advertising in the digital age,” agency leadership says. Stakeholder comments point to the prevalence of fake reviews and testimonials online, and “a rule clearly spelling out prohibited practices and allowing for the judicial imposition of civil penalties could strengthen deterrence and FTC enforcement actions," the commission says.

The US Federal Trade Commission cites the emergence of AI chatbots as one of many reasons it should move forward “expeditiously” with its proposed rule to eradicate fake reviews and testimonials online and pose civil penalties on violators.

“It has been reported that an AI chatbot is being used to create fake reviews. As the reporting notes, the widespread emergence of AI chatbots is likely to make it easier for bad actors to write fake reviews,” the FTC notes in its 30 June
