Lush Cosmetics’ ‘Self-Preserving’ Strategy Poses Challenges, Risks

While the strategy may resonate with consumers wary of parabens and other traditional preservative options, it’s also costly, labor-intensive and potentially risky.

Safety considerations aside, conventional preservatives carry stigmas that many “green”-minded companies are working to avoid, including UK-based Lush Cosmetics Ltd., whose “self-preserving” products do not require synthetic preservatives to stay fresh, the company says.
