CIR News In Brief: No Conclusion Reached On PHMB; Endocrine Activity Guidance; More

At its Sept. 11-12 meeting in Washington, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel finalized reports for various protein and peptide ingredient families, among others, and advanced six tentative reports. The panel issued a tentative insufficient data conclusion for broad-spectrum preservative polyaminopropyl biguanide, with concerns about sensitization continuing to weigh on the group.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel issued seven final reports at its Sept. 11-12 meeting in Washington, finding all of the ingredient groups safe as used, with some isolated ingredient exceptions and caveats. Three families of protein and peptide ingredients – predominantly used as skin- and hair-conditioning ingredients in cosmetics – were among those assessed, along with shea-derived ingredients, polyurethanes and others. Meanwhile, six tentative reports advanced, all with "safe as used" findings except Mentha piperita (peppermint)-derived ingredients, which require additional data overall, and polyaminopropyl biguanide, for which data also were deemed insufficient, according to the post-meeting announcement.
