The cosmetics industry is urging California lawmakers to harmonize a bill’s definitions of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances with international guidelines. They suggest that if amendments are made they will support the measure that would prohibit the sale or manufacture of cosmetic products in the state that contain PFAS.
AB 2771 was introduced in February and if passed would go into effect starting in 2025. It builds on the state’s 2020 Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, which prohibits the intentional use of listed ingredients of concern in cosmetic products, including 13 PFAS, beginning on 1 January 2025
